Halls of residence: the CROUS
France has a network of student support centres (the Centre National des Oeuvres Universitaires et Scolaires and several Centres Régionaux des Oeuvres Universitaires et Scolaires) that own 165,000 properties throughout the country’s regions.
Rooms in halls of residence are intended primarily for students in receipt of grants, but may also be let to other students, subject to availability.
Accommodation in halls of residence is equipped with all mod cons and is usually located close to university facilities.

Financial support for housing
Housing benefits, namely the individual housing allowance (Aide Personnalisée au Logement or APL) and social housing allowance (Allocation de Logement Social or ALS), are awarded by the family allowance office (Caisse d’Allocations Familiales or CAF).
