Luiz Bissoto is an Assistant Professor of Finance at NEOMA Business School. Luiz's research interests span venture capital, private equity, entrepreneurial finance, and applied machine learning. His work studies the financing and performance implications of startups trading on private secondary markets, the persistence of predictability in startup performance, and the role of institutional venture capital firms in startup success.
Luiz earned his Ph.D. in Finance from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Swiss Finance Institute. He also holds an M.Sc. in International Finance from HEC Paris, a Diplôme d'Ingénieur (M.Sc. in Engineering) from ENSTA Paris, and a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the State University of Campinas. He has presented his research at venues including the FMA Annual Meeting, the Cambridge Conference on Alternative Finance, and the Portuguese Finance Network Conference. Luiz also has extensive experience in machine learning competitions, having placed 16th out of more than 3,500 participants worldwide in the ADIA Lab Causal Discovery Challenge in 2024. During his doctoral studies, he was named Best Teaching Assistant in the Master in Financial Engineering section at EPFL (2023). Before his academic career, he worked in product management at technology startups (CityFalcon and Voltaware) and as an M&A analyst at Société Générale, and he passed all three levels of the CFA Program exams.
