In the framework of the module International Governance, the students of the Master of Science in Global Management and the Head of Studies Marina BASTOUNIS, spent the first week of April in Brussels, following dedicated seminars in the EU institutions and visiting companies related to business and finance. The purpose of the trip is to provide students with an insider’s view of the environment within which business innovation, growth and freedom are secured by the European Union.
In the framework of the module International Governance, the students of the Master of Science in Global Management and the Head of Studies Marina BASTOUNIS, spent the first week of April in Brussels, following dedicated seminars in the EU institutions and visiting companies related to business and finance. The purpose of the trip is to provide students with an insider’s view of the environment within which business innovation, growth and freedom are secured by the European Union.
In the European Commission, seminars focused on EU strategy, particularly relating to Trade deals, and the sustainability objectives of a circular economy. Students were received for conferences in the European Parliament and the Council of Ministers where discussions looked at the economic future of Europe, and lots was said on the process and effects of Brexit.
The shifting face of global markets and societies and the meaning of global citizenship was at the centre of students’ questions. The return of protectionism, nationalism and a wave of surprise elections across Europe and the world, surrounding economic activities with uncertainty. Facing and adapting to the changing times is a core consideration for the MSc In Global Management graduates, who aim to pursue careers across borders and lead to new solutions for progress and wellbeing. This, only a few days before the surprise announcement of the British snap elections.
The same issues were analysed at ING bank with Serge MORES, Business Manager, who provided his analysis of the current climate in the financial markets, and shared a few telling anecdotes from his long experience in banking. At the moment of Brexit, ING is moving their Brussels trading rooms to London and the move reveals the endless complexities and possibilities that characterize today’s job markets.
Later, at the invitation of Isabelle THOMAS, Sales Manager Europe West and her team at Thomson-Reuters headquarters, the fascinating details of flagship software for managing global financial information, such Eikon and Datastream, were presented to students. Finally, students had the chance to hear the Reuters Media Bureau Chief Editorials Alastair MACDONALD talk about the flow and quality of information in the days of social media and “fake news”
